These teaching materials were developed by a team of leading educators, including literacy teachers and music teachers, under the guidance of Juilliard professor Eric Booth. The curriculum has been piloted over a three-year period in schools in New York and Nashville. The MUSIC FROM THE INSIDE OUT Curriculum will be published by Alfred Music Publishing later this year, along with a special edition DVD that includes 30 minutes of additional segments for classroom use that do not appear in the original theatrical version of the film. FOR TEACHERSAt the heart of the MUSIC FROM THE INSIDE OUT approach to music education is the premise that serious engagement in music can be an appealing and transforming experience for a wide range of students. Discarding conventional wisdom that we can't talk about music if we don't have a technical understanding and vocabulary, this approach enables children to develop their own vocabulary with which to voice their experiences with music. Watching the documentary stories unfold and hearing the words of the Philadelphia Orchestra musicians -- who are in the midst of their own exploration about their relationship with music -- provides an ideal point of departure for students to embark on their own experiential journey. General education teachers without a music background will find plenty of support for teaching children how to listen proficiently, and to participate and engage in music and music-making. Music educators will find inspirational stories of musicians that go hand in hand with activities to help kids truly understand the relevance of their own musical lives. A special DVD for teachers will include footage of a teacher working with a class of children, utilizing the teacher's guide. Music education does not take place just in the classroom, but in a variety of other ways: through the programming of concerts, through the way musicians relate to their audiences, and how music and musical resources are integrated into the life of the community. The centerpiece of the outreach effort is a series of workshops led by esteemed arts educator Eric Booth of Juilliard. With an assembled gathering of community cultural leaders, arts educators and others, Booth will use excerpts from the film as a springboard to have a dialogue about the role of music and music education in the community. These seminars will be open to anyone who has a stake in music and learning. Participants will look at innovative models of music education around the country and, with the help of Mr. Booth, develop ways in which their communities can start to incorporate these principles in their own musical outreach efforts. Seminars will be designed to help participants focus on what is artistically valuable in music. They will explore ways in which an untrained listener can understand elements of music and follow those elements throughout a piece. Participants will discuss how to translate these ideas into a concrete, experiential activity that gets people thinking about and experiencing music in new ways. This hands-on approach has proven to radically change the way audiences engage in a musical performance.
